Thank you to the author @falenciatheestoryteller @readin.magazine @michael.laborn and @bindery_books for the opportunity to read this amazing debut novel! Devil of the Deep by Falencia Jean-Francois is an incredible debut novel that takes The Little Mermaid, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haitian Culture, Vodun, and queerness, shakes them together, and calls to life a story about bodies, about the policing of bodies and belief, high control groups, and what it means to find your voice. If you have a minute, an hour, a day, a week, please consider picking up Devil of the Deep and giving it a read. I promise you, you will not regret it. Yes, the beginning of the book feels “slow” but this is just a less action-packed way of story telling. Once you hit the midpoint in the book, you will not be able to put it down.
This is for my reading and writing friends and maybe authors from trad pub like @danaiwrites , @mariamorawrites , or @paperfury who might have feelings about queer rep in books, queer rep as authors, and even the potential impact of Heated Rivalry and the rise of MM romance’s popularity on queer people in bookish spaces My goal is to get together a roundtable discussion of readers and writers to talk about these issues and discuss what the best path forward is for those of us who are queer and see our community potentially being helped or harmed. If you would like to participate, feel free to DM me or to leave a comment below. Love to all of you in these dumpster fire times and remember, representation is our most powerful source of hope. #attentionauthors #roundtable #discussion #queereads #queerwriters

Thank you to @thenerdfam and @msmasoodauthor for the opportunity to read this breathtaking book. M. S. Masood, you’re stuck with me for life, now. Or at least until you stop publishing such amazing books. I think the most beautiful thing about the relationship in The Unnamed is the level of respect that is forged between the characters. From the Healer not pushing the wedding night tradition onto Reim, much to her relief, to Reim learning how much the Healer means to the Unnamed in Vuor, a mutual respect and, eventually, desire grows between these two people who have been created to hate one another. This is what, in my opinion, makes the end of the book so tragic. You think finally they’re going to be able to understand that they strengthen one another... only for the plot to have other ideas. Can’t say more without spoiling it, but M. S. Masood... you almost broke my heart. I’m not kidding. #thebookofnamesduology #newrelease #bookreview
